Game as a medium

Detention

Detention is a horror survival game which is based on 1960s Taiwan under martial law.

There are two main characters, Ray and Wei. The first of game begins with Wei's point of view. So I think the main character is Wei, but the main character was not Wei. This strange composition was really inspired for me.

This game is composited by 4 chapters. The first chapter was Ray is trying to find the exit by escaping the ghosts. Through it, I was able to know the story of the overall game. 

As I mentioned, The background of the game is 1960s Taiwan under martial law. 

So, there are a lot of teachers from the military in the school, and the teachers are trying to find a traitor. Here the traitor means in this game, people who want to break up a dictatorship and achieve democracy.  

When I played this game, I thought about this game just shout democracy under dictatorship, but the game describes tragedies in a way that is far more effective than drawing such struggles.

 I think the game seems to be getting players' empathy by concentrating on individuals who could not but be on the brink of dictatorship. They all want to live happily, that is all. Detention was a game that left me a lot of impressions.

Hannibal

Curating My best tv show

2013 in Las Vegas, I faced an unforgettable tv show in my life. I just turned on the tv and then changed channel unconsciously, and I encountered this tv show. 

It looked really dark generally, it was why I had interesting this tv show. 

Let me talk about visual of Hannibal. First, the title sequence of this show is the most striking piece in my life. The blood flowed in the frame and then the blood starts to make the face of the main character. Even they did not use a lot of colors and techniques, they just use liquid effect and white background that it is. They made the masterpiece by using simplest. 

As I mentioned, Hannibal is dark overall. This is because the stories are never a light topic.

Many people knew that already, Hannibal is serious killer. In addition, he beautify the murder in the show. After he kills people, he usually makes food and then he put the food on beautiful plate. It is literally art. When I look at the scene, I am really confused and I feel that I've never experienced emotion before. What does mean of ‘murder’ for Hannibal or what is ‘murder’ 

To be honest, I think Hannibal is not a good tv show, I mean, I cannot say “you should watch it, this was so fantastic”  How dare I am.

SHERLOCK

I watched Sherlock which is one of my favorite tv show. 
Honestly, I have not watched whole seasons yet, but the season 1 is the best I could tell. 

Sherlock is based on Sherlock homes stories which was written by Arthur Conan Doyle. 
I think there are many of tv shows were made by book, among them, the Sherlock seems to express the contents of the book very well. 

There are two main characters in Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes and  Dr. Watson, and the background of Sherlock is London. This part made me watch Sherlock. Sherlock made a good representation of England. When I think of England, things are drawn naturally, black taxi, Big Ben, and London Eye. Sherlock took these thing very well. 

Sherlock was really popular in Korea, and viewer rating was high. It was sensation to me who did not enjoy other country drama well. Even one of my friend had a plan to get in London because of Sherlock, she really wanted to go to Baker street. 
As I see these situation, Sherlock seems to be doing well as a media.

What is life?

After I read this novel, I asked myself.

Let me talk about the novel.

Asterios Polyp is a successful architect. One day, his life begins to crack. The reason is that lightning struck his house, and he tore out of the apartment without spirit. That day was his 50th birthday. What a life it is…

Suddenly, the moment he needs to break up with his fiftieth-century life, and he accepts it. He takes a subway to go to the bus terminal. He leaves to the farthest point where he could go on the remaining cash and then he arrived Apogee. He lives totally new life. 

The beginning of a fateful journey.

The color of the novel is great, but not colorful, the color is highly restrained.

There are three main colors, blue, yellow, and red. The role of colors is merely representative of his ego.

While I was reading this novel, I thought I was not the only person who live a complicated life. I was comforted from this novel.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

I watched several times The Grand Budapest hotel, but I did not get the end of the movie whenever I watched. I think I am not a fan of Wes Anderson. 

Nevertheless, I saw the movie again was because of uniqueness. The movie was so inspired for me. I could not take my eyes off the film. I can say, Wes Anderson is the master of symmetric and color. 

Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman and the Grand Budapest Hotel.

I really wondered that where Wes Anderson can get inspiration, and where his idea came from. 

Here is the key which can solve my curiosity.

Wes Anderson got inspired from Stefan Zweig’s writings a lot. 

Stefan Zweig’s stories contain nesting stories within stories and confessional revelations of deep secrets within secrets.  

Even the Queen

The story begins women’s period. The equipment which can stop period was discovered, every woman finally ended up their period. One day, Perdita announced she would have a period and do not use equipment anymore. By joining Cyclist(supporting women’s period), she expresses her opinion stubbornly. Her family were in a panic and gather in order to restrain her period.

I really enjoyed this story and I was thinking after read it what if the women do not have a period anymore?. Even when I just think about it, I feel so happy. I am a person who has always dissatisfaction that why only the women have to get a period?

The women’s body begins to change when they have period. In my case, I eat a lot of sweetness food before I start to get period and have severe mood swing. Even I had to hear from my friend what’s wrong with you? Are you having period?. Whenever I heard that words, I always think that why I have to get a terrible experience every month?. This is unfair.

Female Hero

  My female hero will be a super independent girl. The super girl would not need any helps from man. I’ve seen a lot that women are always under too much men’s care in tv shows or movies, even they wanted it. 
  
  I always was wondering why tv shows or films cannot be made the character of women to be independent, and why men say women should not be allowed to do so when women want to be an independent girl.   

  When I was a child, my mom always said “be an independent girl”, “do not be controlled by guys”, and my mom treated me like my older brother so I did not feel any unfair between me and my brother. Because of my mom, I became the girl who can claim my rights. 

 To sum up, my female hero are not just “ I hate men, the world can be dominated under the women”. She can assert her right confidently from any absurdity.

True Grit

  I became the fan of Mattie. Mattie left her house to find Tom Chaney who murders her father, and She disposes of a murdered father’s body by herself and then, with a keepsake from her father, make a deal with  Col. Stonehill. What a brave girl, can a girl who is only 14-year-old leaves home for her father's revenge?. 

  

  She hired Rooster Cogburn to help her to catch Chaney and avenge her father. LaBoeuf who named Texas Ranger is also tracking Chaney for reasons of his own. Together The improbable team ventured into an adverse area to allocate Old West justice.

  In the movie, the life of people is showing to what a "western" might be. They worn kind of brown big coat with a fedora and they always ride a horse in order to move to another city. The background is really interesting me, there were no pavement and covered with mountains. It was reflected well what I thought about western. 

Pride and Prejudice

  I haven't been interested in this novel because it might be a romance novel, and this novel is just a love affair with the rich man and a common woman. After I read it, this was not a romance novel. It was totally my ‘prejudice’. 

Pride and Prejudice was a social novel that shows various ways of settling down in marriage.

  Let me talk about Elizabeth and Darcy. Elizabeth did not have good first impression for Darcy because Darcy is rich guy who does not need to make a money, and his family look down on Elizabeth’s family for lower in rank than they are, moreover he interrupt marriage of her sister and Bingley, and It was misunderstanding, she heard that he abandoned Wickham in the past. These reasons made Elizabeth get prejudice “he is a very arrogant person.”

  At the end of story, they acknowledged their lack of respect each other, and solved the misunderstanding between them through conversations, and they got married right after clarified problems. Their marriage was beautiful even they did not meet often, it was well-organized.

  I was also interested in women’s life by reading pride and prejudice. I thought that at that time, women’s life was much different those of now, but the women who did not get married yet, there was nothing special to do in their life. They just hang out with their cousins, building up knowledge of art, and going to party. I was surprised that or I way expected that.

Literature and Media

I was born in Gwang Ju which is the sixth largest city in South Korea. Gwang Ju has relations to art. The city has a modern art festival every two years called the Gwang Ju Biennale. People living in Gwang Ju have outstanding artistic ability.

I have lived more than half of my life in Gwang Ju. I was getting bored of Gwang Ju.

Sometimes I wanted to leave the city, but I was worried if I could live well without my parents after leaving Gwang Ju.

In 2009, my life totally changed. My mom and I went to watch the movie “AVATAR”. I did not expect to like this movie because I had never seen 3D movies before, and I did not know this movie would have a great influence on my life. The movie was incredible. I was totally speechless.

After I watched the movie, I was unable to get it out of my mind. I researched how the movie was made, what technology they used, and where I should study in order to make a movie like “AVATAR.”

 I had never thought about what I wanted to be or what I wanted to study before. I was just a normal student who always hated homework and was not interested in studying. I waited for the weekends so I could hang out with friends. I was a negative and lazy person. 

I was thinking a lot about what I could do to be happy, and I thought about myself again. I found the answer after thinking a lot, and I decided to study art. I was excited, and I developed creative ideas when I learned art.

My friends made fun of me, “How did a movie change your life?” But my life has changed a lot because of the movie. Now, I am studying motion design and struggling for my dream.
